Block Website on your Windows PC without any software

You surf the Internet every now and then. And it is obvious that you will find any incompatible website. And if you want to block such websites on your PC, you can do it very easily. Yes it is easy to block any website on your PC without any third party software.

How it can be useful?

It can be useful for many purposes. For Example, if you have any children in home so you can block adult sites. Or you can block any social networking sites where children spend lots of their time.

It is all possible by tweaking the ‘Host’ file. It works in Windows XP. Don’t know about other OS. After the procedure we will discuss how it works.

You can also block any website which you don’t want to go. So what are you waiting for? Block incompatible websites now by these simple steps.

STEPS FOR BLOCKING WEBSITES:

• From your desktop, click on My Computer.
• Now, you have to find “Host” file in your C drive. It is usually located in C Drive> WINDOWS> system32> drivers> etc> hosts. Just follow these path if it shows anywhere that files are hidden, just click on show hidden files.
• Open the Hosts file with Notepad. Just right click on ‘Hosts’ file and click on open. And select notepad and click OK.
• Now the trick comes. You will see some keywords in that file. At last, you will see a IP address, mostly “127.0.0.1” and a key word “localhost”.
• Just below that, copy and paste the IP address which is in the front of ‘localhost’ and give atleast one space and type the website which you want to block. Do it twice. Once with ‘www’ and again without ‘www’. See below screenshot for easy understanding. Click the Image to zoom.    

•  Now if you want some other website to block, put it here in the same format but with ‘www’ and without ‘www’. The reason for this is the website with ‘www’ and without ‘www’ are the two separate websites. For example if you put www.facebook.com OR facebook.com in address bar, yet it will land you to the same website but the address will be different. So if you block website with only ‘www’ then the same website can be open without ‘www’. So it’s better to put both. You can add any number of websites.
• After this change, just click on ‘file’ and then ‘save’ and come back to your desktop.
• Now open any browser and go to your blocked website and VOILA! IT WORKS. Your browser will say you that we can’t establish connection on server blah blah blah, or any other error message. If it is still opening, than reboot your computer and check again.  

So, now you know how to block websites. And the best part of this trick is we do not need any software and the website will be blocked on all browsers. It works with all browser.

Now you may ask question that how this trick works? Well we’ll answer you. Usually when you type any website in address bar, the browser first open the Hosts file and check the submitted domain. If it doesn’t found the website on Hosts file, then it will search on Internet. And the website will open. But when it find the website on Hosts file, then it will go to the given IP of that website, which is a localhost i.e it is not a online IP. So it will search on localhost and browser can’t find that website on localhost and displays a error message. Isn’t it amazing? All these works of computer is completed in fraction of seconds!
